Serving the Village
Our mission is to restore, repurpose, and reimagine the Elementary School property at 140 Old Oyster Road as a Community Center for all generations.
We’re asking residents to imagine new ways to offer and use local programs and services.
Imagine that tomorrow you could go down Main Street and buy fresh, local produce at an indoor / outdoor farmers market. Or play a pickup game of basketball in the gym, get expert advice from a neighbor with decades of experience, drop the kids off for a couple hours, or take a class on how to build a Cotuit skiff from start to finish... and then learn how to sail it. The possibilities of what we can do with the existing Elementary School property are limited only by the creativity of fellow Cotuit residents.
With the imminent transfer of the 20,794 square foot building to the Cotuit Fire District, a group of villagers have been exploring the formation of a nonprofit entity to act as a vehicle for: 1) understanding community needs, 2) developing services and programming according to those needs, and 3) structuring a financially self-sustaining model with no taxpayer burden.
The initial costs to fix up and furnish the building will require substantial fundraising efforts but the immediate intention is to generate enough revenue to cover operational expenses through affordable memberships, events, classes, and retail. Any profits will be directly reinvested back into the local community through organizations such as the Library, Civic Association, Historical Society, CMYC, etc.
If you have any ideas, notions, whims, or feelings about how the property can be used, please use the contact form at the bottom to send us a message. For a show of support, join our mailing list below.
We’ll do our best to keep this website updated with the latest ideas, findings, and plans as they develop.
